SLIDESHOW: Demining Western Sahara
Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, was annexed by Morocco in 1975. The territory's Polisario movement fought a guerrilla war against the Moroccan military until a ceasefire in 1991. During the conflict Morocco constructed a 2,500-km defensive wall, known as the Berm. The barrier cuts the Western Sahara in two - 85 percent is controlled by Morocco and the rest by the Polisario. The minebelt that runs alongside the Berm is believed to be the longest continuous minefield in the world. Photo by Saeed Taji Farouky |
