Kashmir dispute

CONFLICT HIGH IN THE HIMALAYAS

Vast numbers of people have been uprooted in a 17-year-old insurgency in Indian-ruled Kashmir.
    • More than 40,000 killed
    • Over 200,000 displaced
    • De facto border divides hundreds of families

The disputed Himalayan region has triggered two wars between Pakistan and India and brought them to the brink of another in 2002. The de facto border is one of the most militarised in the world.

Some Indian and Pakistani analysts predicted the massive earthquake which hit Kashmir on Oct. 8, 2005 would bring major steps towards peace but there has been little evidence of this.
