Western Sahara is littered with unexploded mines and ordnance following a lengthy war between Moroccan troops and the Polisario Front, the independence movement of the indigenous Sahrawi people.

The British-based agency Landmine Action has been training a Sahrawi team how to clear the area.

Photographer Saeed Taji Farouky visited Western Sahara this year to see them in action. Click here to see his slides.

For key background, see AlertNet's crisis briefing on the Western Sahara dispute.
